Etienne Grivot & his wife Marielle
Etienne Grivot & his wife Marielle took over from his father 1990. The Fifth generation of Grivots to make wine in Vosne-Romanée. In 1930s it was one of the first domaines to bottle and sell the wines themselves. The Grivots go back a long way in Burgundy. Jean Grivot, whose name continues to appear on the labels, took over from his father in 1955 and handed on to his son Etienne in the early 1980s.
The Fifth generation of Grivots - Etienne Grivot
Étienne Grivot arrived at the domaine in 1982 to work alongside his father Jean. Three-four years later he took on some responsibility. Altogether there was a long period of transition, eight years, moving from one generation to the next. Now, with the arrival of the next generation of Grivots – Mathilde and Hubert – three years ago there are changes up ahead.
The grapes are entirely destemmed and maceration à froid usually lasts just a day or two. The fermentation starts naturally, with a little punching down before this fermentation begins. There is no more pigeage after fermentation begins
The domaine is going through an exciting phase as responsibility transferred from the hands of Etienne to the talented, educated and passionate hands of his daughter Mathilde, who brings a fresh approach to this fine domaine while keeping the long time tradition of the Grivot family. The process of “generational change” in Domaine Grivot has been extremely smooth and very successful. The winery and cellars have just completed a massive reconstruction, bringing it to top modern standards.
“I don’t like to mix the physical (punching down) with the spiritual (fermentation)”
- Étienne Grivot -
After fermentation, the wines are pumped over once a day before aging in barrel for 15 months. Depending on the vintage, the proportion of new oak is around 25% for the villages appellations, 30-40% for the premier crus and 40-45% percent for the grands crus.
There is an average age of 45- to 50-year-old vines across this 15-hectare domaine which covers 22 appellations (18 red) with holdings in Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-St Georges, Clos de Vougeot, Échezeaux and Richebourg. Etienne produces a range of stunning wines which possess real depth and class.
